Eight Philadelphia area pediatric practices were recognized at a ceremony hosted by the Pennsylvania Regional Extension & Assistance Center for HIT (PA REACH) for their leadership in the nationwide transition to electronic health records (EHRs). These practices included:
· Andorra Pediatrics
· Bethany Pediatrics
· Center City Pediatrics
· Falls Pediatric & Teen Care
· Kressly Pediatrics
· Lower Bucks Pediatrics
· The Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine Centers of Philadelphia
· Torresdale Pediatircs
The event was held on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Villanova Conference Center in Radnor, PA.
Officials from the the Centers from Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Public Welfare (DPW), and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics joined PA REACH East in congratulating and honoring these physicians for their vision and dedication to improving patient care through the use of health information technology. Collectively, these eight practices serve 28,495 patients.
Dr. Susan Kressly, from Kressly Pediatrics, received the PA REACH Pediatric Vanguard Award for her many contributions to the PA REACH program, as well as her staunch advocacy of the importance of health IT in pediatric medicine.
Dr. William F. King Jr, a pediatrician from The Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine Centers of Philadelphia, participated in the ceremony as not only an honoree, but also shared his practice’s experience with their EHR system. Dr. King admitted that he was hesitant to transition to an EHR system primarily because he did not want to lose the rapport he has with his patients by having his “nose in the computer during the entire visit.”
Dr. King has learned to adapt to the EHR and now sees the many benefits it brings to the care he can deliver to his patients. “EHRs are going to help the health care system, the improvement of patient care demands it.”
